I'm trying to get a score to look like the photo below. How do you make a song have both notes and slash notation at the same time. I've seen this with lots of guitar scores. Basically I was thinking if there was a way to make the rest change to the slash mark. Is that possible to convert rests in a measure to a slash mark which at the same time have notes in the same bar. In other words in a song in cut time I'd like to have a quarter, a quarter rest (but a slash), a quarter, and a quarter rest (but a slash).

Use a staff style for the slashes.
Select the Staff Tool and highlight only the rests you'd like slashes for. Then either press "S" which is the keyboard shortcut for slashes, or go to Staff > Apply Staff Style To > Score and Parts… > Slash Notation.
Hope this helps

And you can always select a partial measure to apply the slash staff style.

I tried highlighting the rest (there aren't full bars of rests just a beat of rest every other quarter note) and I can't seem to get it to turn into the slash mark. Is there a way to convert rests into slashes?

Sure. Any beat or partial measure can be changed into slashes (1 per beat).
You just have to "practice" how to select a partial measure.
Staff tool.
Click outside of the staff, hold the mouse button, and drag into the staff to select a region, even a partial measure.
Then apply the staff style (Shortcut : S or via the Staff menu).

You can only change the rest character globally (i.e., everywhere). In document options / notes and rests, you can change the quarter rest character.
I don't think the slash notation looks very good:

It works! There were two problems:
1. I was working on a laptop and did not have my simple entry commands set to laptop settings. I did this by going into the edit key commands dialog box in the simple entry options and switching the default settings to laptop. This enabled me to use the "S" key to change to slash notation when in the Staff tool.
2. I was working in "cut time" and trying to make slashes at the quarter note level. What I needed to do in this instance is change the time signature to "cut time beamed as 4/4" in the dropdown menu from a selected measure.
Thanks everyone for your help!
