I'd submit a photo or a video of my problem but I can't seem to figure out how.

So I want to input a snare on the upbeat of beat 2 but it seems when I make beat 2 an 8th note(was a quarter note ride) all the other notes shift backwards in value by an 8th note.

So I just want to know what's the best strategy for inputting notes in the middle of a measure in finale

After changing the note on beat 2 to an eighth note, click your upbeat in with the mouse.

If you uncheck "Check for extra notes" and "Fill with rests at end of measure" in Simple Entry Options, you will be able to perform such editing, even with complex tuplets in the measure. But then you will need to be careful you end up with the correct value of notes for the time in the measure as additional notes will appear to be written in the ensuing measure.

If it’s something that simple, delete and re-enter it. Otherwise, as has been noted, you need to keep count of the durations.
