Hi everyone,

I need to copy in a swing equation (dotted 8th/16th=triplet 8ths with the middle one a rest). I'm sorry, I can select and copy the equation into a Word document, but cannot figure out how to get it to show here. I've searched but haven't figured out a work-around, I assume this should be an expression, in Maestro font?

Thanks for any help! I'm using Finale 2008 on Windows 10.

Peter

Peter, it's a little more involved than that. A few years ago, I worked on it for a bit, and I wrote up a tutorial.

I'll look around, and if I can find it, I'll send it to you.

That would be amazing, thanks so much Zuill! How do I insert that into an expression?

This was done in v26. I don't have 2008, so I can't really be of help. I'm not even sure the font I used (Maestro Times) is available in 2008.

Maestro Times and Maestro are available; what I meant was to ask, is there a way to insert a .jpg of what you wrote in? Or could you tell me the typing method of entering that in one of those fonts?

Thanks again!

I did a lot of messing around, so I can't say that I would be able to tell you how I did it. With Maestro Times, you can do some things in a straight line. however, mixing 8ths with an 8th rest doesn't work with that paradigm. So, if you can get everything but the triplet sign and bracket, then you can put that on the line above, and change the baseline to a negative number until it gets into the place above the 8ths that suits you. I did create an XML file, but it didn't open in a usable way in earlier Finale versions. You could just use the jpeg file I posted. Maybe the quality is not high enough, but that's a possibility.

Thanks Zuill; how would I use the .jpg file you posted, to insert into my document?

First, save the jpeg somewhere. Then, with the Graphics Tool, double click where you want it. Then navigate to where you saved the jpeg file and it should appear in you score.

I tried that, but I'm getting an 'invalid file type' error message...

I'm guessing 2008 has limitations that later versions don't have.

I have sent him a tutorial I wrote on this subject. We'll see if it works for him.

Don't include the Eighth note Rest in the Triplet,
unless you want a Choppy, Rik-a-tik sound.
Make it a Quarter Note followed by an Eighth Note.

Thanks everyone! I'm trying to copy out a pre-existing expression as I compose a new piece. Finale 2008 is apparently quite limited in what it will do!
