We are creating instrument method books for our students, and we're wanting to copy specific examples from our previous books into our new one.
We tried to open two files, but PrintMusic wouldn't allow us to.
How would you copy an example from one file, (book), into a new one?

How old is 3.1?
Normally, all that’s required is to select and copy on the old version, and paste into a new one. Up until version 2014, you could only paste into the same version or newer. Since then, .musx files can be pasted forwards or backwards between 2014, F25, and F26.

I remember it was possible to copy (a couple of measures and like) from a file open in 2014 and paste to one in 2014.5 or vv. It didn't work this time, do I remember it wrong?

If it does not work for you, take a look in the Edit menu.
Perhaps Finale is set to, Use Filter?
Toggling the Copy Filter on/off is a program specific setting (not a document specific setting).
This means that the Copy Filter will still be on if you close the current Finale document, and open another document - the Copy Filter will not “automatically” get toggled off.
