Layer playback

In my previous version (2005) I could set different dynamics for layers 1 & 2 on the same staff and, as long as each layer was using a separate MIDI channel, this would playback as expected.
Now, in v.26, because expressions are not allocated to particular layers, the dynamics affect all layers.
Is there a way I can get the soloist on layer 1 to play at a higher volume than the tutti players on layer 2?
Thanks

After you apply the dynamic, right click the handle and select Edit Expression Assignment. There is a place to assign the playback affect to a particular layer. That should work. It does for me.

I'm adding this question to this thread, but layer playback is just part of the problem with my French horns.
First, Human Playback decided that it was time to interpret "marcato" as "mute". I had to take out all the marcati and mark the horn parts "open". That got rid of the mutes but I lost the articulation that HP had been playing correctly up to that point. To compensate, I added a doubling part in Layer 2 playing short 8th notes on every attack. But Layer 2 wouldn't play. Sound from Layer 1, no sound from Layer 2. I "soloed" Layer 2 and heard nothing. So I copied Layer 2 to Layer 3. Still nothing audible from Layer 2 but Layer 3 was playing. OK, good enough, so I deleted everything from Layer 2. Now nothing from Layer 3. Argh. So I put back Layer 2. Now I hear Layer 3 playing but when I go back to playing the whole line, Layer 1 can't be heard. Seriously, WTF.
I'll add that this was a file created under v.25, and my troubles started when I began working on it with v.26. Any ideas?
Thanks all,
Tom

I write guitar music always in 3- 4 layers. When I add dynamics I hear they always effect all layers (unless I use the Expression Assignment dialog box).
However, if I go to the Expression Assignment dialog box I find that the default is "Current layer" - I would have expected it to say "All layers"?
Can anyone clarify what "Current layer" might mean - and how it might differ form "expression layer" - miscalled "dynamic layer" in the Finale help file.

I am using Finale v26 for Mac . I followed your advice, but all layers play at the same dynamic. Do you have any other suggestions, being one of the primary experts on this website

I am not Zuill.
But I suppose it is OK, if I reply anyway.
Are all the layers on the same MIDI channel?
That could explain it.
The original poster (= peterqd) pointed out that different layers can have different dynamics, if each layer is using a separate MIDI channel.

I jump in as well.
My Oboe and English Horn don't sound for as long as I want to at the end, so I need to add a second layer to play the last beats to the end of the piece. But then I need to fade out the first layer and fade in the second one. Is this possible to do? It should be, since this is very common in choirs where people have to breath on different beats, whatever that's called in English.

Did you get an answer for this?TonyEastwood wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 9:56 pmI write guitar music always in 3- 4 layers. When I add dynamics I hear they always effect all layers (unless I use the Expression Assignment dialog box).

I'm having a similar issue (v27.2, Mac): 1 staff, 2 layers going to different MIDI channels, trying to have 1 expression affect playback of both layers.
I'm trying the "Expression Assignment" dialog box ("Expression" tool > right-click expression handle > select "Edit Expression Assignment" > "Expression Assignment" dialog box), but none of the options in the "On Playback, Affect" dropdown menu accomplish this. Questions:
What is "Current Layer" supposed to refer to in that dropdown menu -- the layer selected when playing, the layer selected when creating the expression? No matter what I try, the affect seems to be the same as selecting "Layer 1".
Is there a setting somewhere else that affects this?
How can this be done?
Thanks!!

More info but not a solution:
"Current Layer" appears to relate to what's selected above in the "Show On:" dropdown menu (whoa, unexpected!). However, when selecting "All Layers" there, it only plays back on Layer 1.
