Finale does not play the music written in the score
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hello guys,
Could you please help me?
My Finale is the 2012 version. I want to listen to what I wrote in the score. I clicked Play, it shows that it charges but it does NOT play anything and there is no indicator as it used to be before. I restarted the computer many times, still does not work.
Could you please tell me what the problem may be?
Thank you!

Do notes sound when you enter them?
Do you have sound in other computer programs?
Have you tried trashing the preference files?

Hi miker,
No, the notes do not sound.
I have sound everywhere else in the computer programs. I can hear the audio files that I saved days or weeks before.
I did not trash any file. I just copied all the files to an external hard-disk as I needed more space in the computer, but after several hours, I copied the files back and deleted something else that I did not need.

Try exporting the file as XML, and importing back in. That may clear up some corruption.
Trashing the preferences is a troubleshooting procedure.

Thank you, miker!
Before reading your 2-nd message I had uninstalled Finale from my computer and I have reinstalled it back. And surprise...now I can hear the music
Thank you so much, miker! You were right, the file was corrupted.

I have experienced the issue in every version, up to 26.3. What works for me are the following steps.
1. MIDI/Audio (upper text menu) -> Re-assign Playback Sounds.
2. Score Manager -> re-select any instrument Finale might have changed.

#1 may work if you're solely using Garritan samples. If you have third-party VSTs set up, reassigning playback sounds will replace them with Garritan samples, necessitating more work to restore the VSTs.

Good to know. Thanks. On my system, Finale will replace Garritan's Electric Bass with Garitan's Jazz Bass every time.
Converting to MusicXML then back again does fix just about any issue; unfortunately, in doing so, many elements get scattered or are lost in the process. Sometimes it is quicker to re-write a score, which is why I always save a document in PDF format for reference.
