Quintuplets

Hello everyone!

I would like to enter a quintuplet of 5 eighth notes over 2 measures in 2/8 time. I tried entering the first note as an eighth note in simple entry and clicking alt-9, but the dialog box didn't help me in this case. How can I make this quintuplet?

It can be done but it's pretty arcane. Also, it won't play back correctly.

Start with two sixteenth quintuplets 8th+8th+16th in the first measure, 16th+8th+8th in the second measure, but in place of each 16th note use "1 eighth in the place of 1 16th":

Then use the beam over barline plug-in:

Finally, hide the second E here (which has the added benefit of hiding its "1" and its "5"), edit the remaining 1-tuplet to set its number to "nothing," and finally edit the quintuplet to allow the "5" to be dragged horizontally.

EDIT: Now that I think about it some more, the second 16th can be an ordinary 16th instead of a 1-tuplet, since it will be hidden.

There may be a better way. I seem to remember user Wess here having mastered such things; hopefully he'll see this.

This solution will even work across a system break.

To beam the two tied 16ths, use the Patterson plug-in Beam Over Barlines.
Before running the plug-in, arrange the layout so that the first measure ends a system, and the second measure begins the next system.
Then the plug-in will beam across the barline in a way that will always work, even across a system break.

If the two measures are in the same system, when you run the plug-in, then the plug-in will beam across the barline in another way (a different solution) which will not work across a system break.

They like it because they don't have to play real quintuplets, but instead alternating triplets and duplets.

Yes. We (I am of course a player, too) are perfectly able, in a group of drummers, to play exactly as it is on the sheet, all the quintuplets absolutely regular. We use to meet a lot of divisions, often more difficult, within or across rhe bars.
