Resize Measures

Postby Hogette444 » Thu Jun 13, 2019 4:12 pm

I"m using Finale 2012 on Windows.
I need to resize measures so that they will fit exactly into an existing piece of music. I know how to resize measures but other than trial and error I don't know how to get measures in a new piece to line up with an existing (purchased) piece of music. The measure size information in Finale doesn't seem to be in inches and it doesn't seem to be in CMs. So if I have a measure in an existing piece of music that 3/4 inch, what number do I need to input into the resize measure tool to get the Finale measure to also be 3/4 inch? To further explain my situation, I have a choral piece for two part women and I am the director of a very, very small church choir. My only man in the choir says that he can't read treble clef so I would like to rewrite the alto part in bass clef and then past it into the original octavo. Hope that explanation helps a bit to understand what I'm trying to do.

Thanks.

Hi Sue,

Here's what I would try:
View > Show > Rulers. Use a fairly large view (200% or more), double-click inside the top ruler to get guides at the beginning and end of the measure(s) and adjust the measure width with Measure tool. Yuo can measure the height of the staff by double-clicking in the lefthand ruler. If it isn't correct, you can resize the staves in Page Tool > Resize Staff System.

Maybe not what you dreamt of, but it's easier than trying out different sizes on a copy machine, as i did once, before the notation-programs era.

If you have the patience...

Measure width has always been somewhat mysterious to me. Anders's method seems good, but if you are adept with something like Photoshop, you could also scan the published music, then cut it out a system at a time and import that into Finale as a graphic above your bass clef staff. You would then be able to line up the barlines visually.

I'm sure it would be a project, though. It might be enough to get the system width right and not worry about the individual barlines adding up. You could maybe give him is own lyrics.

Thank you both! I'll play with these options and see how successful I am.
