attach slurs to noteheads en masse

Post by montedoro44 » Tue May 19, 2020 11:28 pm

Is there a way to select all slurs in a doc and switch all that are possible to switch to noteheads? I see the Smartshape option "Attach to noteheads" but this seems to refer to future slurs, not already-existing ones. And in any case, it is grayed out and I don't know what it wants to ungray itself.

slurs are, by default, attached to noteheads.

There's actually an option to not attach them to the noteheads, but to the beats. It seems I recall times when that worked better for me in some situations, but the reason slips my mind at the time. In earlier versions of Finale, slurs were done as expressions, and they were not attached to notes (or anything, for that matter).

Anyway, I can't find a way to convert them from one type to the other.

Thanks for getting back, zuill. Can you tell me the conditions under which Smart Shape > Attach to Noteheads is active (ungray)?

The 3 options are in the Smart Shape menu: Attach to Beats, Attach to Notes and Attach to Noteheads. Finale grays out options that are not available for each of the Smart Shapes.

Thanks -- I get it now. "Attach to Noteheads" doesn't concern slurs -- I see glissando, guitar slide, activate it. Not obvious.

the reason I mention that slurs are, by default, attached to noteheads, is because the OP is using Finale 26.

It would be good to know if this is a very much older file that is being imported into Finale 26?

The option to not attach to noteheads has not been around for a long time.

It would help to see a file where these slurs are not attached and see if there is some reason for it.

Thank you, Michael for continuing here. I have attached a file that contains many stem-attached slurs (Consigned to dust Trio), and the original version. The original comes from here as xml:

http://www0.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Con ... attishill)

and Finale's original appearance has the slurs note-head attached. What I do with such files is use Score Manager to change all instruments to French horn, which adds 1 # and transposes up 5 or down 4 (Finale is a bit whimsical about that), and then I experiment using Key Signature Tool until the piece sits well for a French horn ensemble. When I am finished, typically some of the stems are going the wrong way, so I fix with Change Stem Direction. It is in these manipulations that some of the slurs come out stem-attached. It looks like all of the slurs stay oriented as is while the notes move up & down and stems reverse.

This isn't a huge problem, as it doesn't take a lot of time to scan such docs for errant stems and flip them. I was just hoping that there is a single operation that can do the job.

It's not clear to me that your slurs are not note attached.

Your slurs are easy to fix. Zoom out so as much as is reasonably possible fits on the screen. From the SmartShape tool, type Ctrl-A, which should select all the visible slurs. Then carefully right-click on one of the handles (being careful not to deselect everything) and pick Remove Manual Slur Adjustments. That should fix them all.

With Ctrl-A, "all" seems to be only all that's currently visible, so for a long piece you may prefer to do it in chunks.

That's amazing. Thanks, motet -- that worked perfectly. And thanks to Michael and zuill for your help here too.

I seem to run into little problems occasionally that have fixes, and I just can't find them.
