Space around articulation?

Post by miker » Mon Jun 29, 2020 6:23 pm

I'm working on a hymn in Tuvaluan, which uses a couple of older practices. One of them is a double barline to mark a phrase, sort of like we would use a caesura. (In fact, Wiki mentions this practice.) The double barline is not problem, either as a shape expression, or a text expression ( / in Maestro Wide,) although the lines are a little too thick. Is there a way to add "elbow room" to this, so it bumps the adjoining notes just a little bit farther apart?

In your post you are talking about expressions (shape expression, text expression), but your thread title uses the word articulation.
And an articulation can be included in Music Spacing:

An articulation can be a font character articulation or a shape articulation.

This was very easy using the split-measure plug-in. After running the plug-in, change the invisible barline to double.

Use the measure spacing handles to adjust the space if you need to:

The split is a good idea. Thanks, Motet.

Peter, you are correct, of course. My bad.

Or, how about an articulation as the topic says, and Peter mentioned. A shape is the best way, as the font would not give control over the line thickness.

I did this long ago with articulations for the dashed barlines. It's a situation where one part is in 2 and the other in 3, but there's only one conductor beating 3.

I'm a little confused, though. If you're adding an articulation or expression to a barline to make it a double barline, why not use a double barline?

You certainly could, simply by using the split measures. I’ll suggest it to him.

Thanks!
