I have created lead sheets with chord symbols a number of times. Today, I am unable to delete a chord symbol. (I accidentally put it on the wrong beat and I want to get rid of it, for example).
I select the Chord Symbol tool.
I highlight the chord I want to delete--in this case, beat 2 of the bar.
I hit the Delete key (or Backspace). I've tried both.
The chord symbol seems to go away.
I click on beat 1 where I want to type the chord.
The deleted chord comes back. I can't get rid of it.
What's going on?

I will post the file (although I'm reluctant to for works in progress). The first chord in bar 5 should be on beat 1, not beat 2. It doesn't
I guess I can't edit a typo in the post title.
look terribly wrong, but it plays back incorrectly.I guess I can't edit a typo in the post title.

Chord tool. Drag the chord to the left so that it gets attached to the first beat (see image). It is currently attached to the second beat (a dotted line shows the beat it is attached to).
P.S. : time to update your profile, which mentions Finale 2011.

We can't tell from a picture. Copy those few measures into another doc, change the notes, whatever.

I'm having the exact problem as Konradh. I delete a chord, but as soon as I move the cursor to a different location so I can enter a new chord, the chord symbol that I just deleted comes back. Has anyone found a solution to this horrific problem that has me dead in the water on a day that I need to get a lot of work done?

As we told the original poster, it’s much easier if we have a Finale document to work from. Can you post a portion that shows the problem?
I just noticed you are a new member of the forum, so you probably won’t be able to post just yet. You can upload the doc to Dropbox or something similar, and post the link, here.

Thank you for getting back to me so promptly.
I have downloaded the document to DropBox. Here is a link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gclq8glariojw ... .musx?dl=0
The entire thing is just 16 measures long.
If you want to see the problem, just delete a chord. Then move your cursor and enter a new chord in a new location. You will then see that the chord you just deleted has reappeared in the old location.
Thank you.

Craig_M,
Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce the problem.
In your Finale document I can delete a chord symbol without problems.
For me, the deleted chord symbol does not re-appear.
What are your steps when you delete a chord symbol?
Do you begin in the Selection Tool, and double-click on a chord symbol?

Thank you for your assistance in this stressful matter.
At this moment, Finale is no longer reinserting deleted chords. I guess the problem in intermittent.
Perhaps that is why is did not misbehave for you. Or maybe you did not take the next step of inserting another chord after deleting the first one. The chord always disappears just fine when you delete it, and it does not reappear until after you click in another location and enter a new chord in that new location. That is the point in time where the old deleted chord reappears in the old location. After deleting the old chord, did you successfully enter a new chord in a new location without the old chord reappearing? That is the test.
For my part, I enter the chords the way I have always done.
1) Click on the Chord Tool
2) Click on the note above which I want the chord to appear
3) Type the note into my computer keyboard
To delete a chord symbol, I just highlight the targeted symbol and press delete. As I said, it deletes just fine but re-appears when I insert another chord elsewhere.

Yes.
I tried that, too.
The deleted chord did not re-appear.

Peter,
Thank you for taking the time to troubleshoot the problem.
The problem is definitely intermittent. It will act up for a matter of minutes or hours and, then suddenly, it clears up with no rhyme to why it went haywire in the first place and no apparent reason for why the hiccup suddenly resolved itself. So I'm not surprised that your troubleshooting did not show a problem.
This Twilight Zone, now-you-see-it now-you-don't nonsense has happened two days in a row, so God knows what I'll find today. But here's the question: What do you do about an intermittent problem that hides when the experts arrive on the scene? Should I get a new copy of Finale and reinstall, or what?
Thanks again for your help and, also, very sincere thanks to Miker, who also gave it the old college try.

Craig M,
My first guess would be that the chord symbol has been entered twice.
When you delete the chord symbol, only one occurrence is deleted.
Hence the second occurrence appears as you proceed.
But I am just guessing.
Generally, periodic errors are hard to track down.

Peter,
Thank you for your input. I really do appreciate anyone who makes the effort to help with these maddening problems that surface from time to time.
I would have written to thank you sooner, but I needed a couple days to recover from the previous frustrations.
The deleted chords will reappear countless times, so I know it can't be just that I'm unknowingly entering the chord symbols multiple times.
I am going to file a request for help with MakeMusic's customer support team. I'll get back to the Forum to let everybody know what they have to say about why deleted chords sometimes reappear for no apparent reason.
Take care

Regarding the problem of the last deleted chord reappearing (reinserting itself) as soon as you try to enter a new chord elsewhere.
I took the problem to the Customer Support representatives at Make Music.Inc and eventually received a response from Kyle, who came up with the answer. You will find his response immediately below.
"When removing the only text from a chord, the instance of the chord remains and Finale is expecting new chord text to be input. Then a new chord is not typed in, Finale reverts to the previously entered chord text. To delete the chord, activate the Chord Tool and then select the square handle at the bottom of the chord that you want to delete. This should turn the chord handle purple, and the chord text should not appear highlighted. Then, select DELETE on your keyboard to remove the chord. Alternatively, you can activate the Selection Tool, click on the chord to select it(causing a purple rectangle to appear around the selected chord), and then select DELETE on your keyboard."
