How to make long note and short notes in same measure

I am trying to put a whole note ( 4/4 ) in the base cleff with eighth notes running in the same measure ( and same cleff ) Allegro will not let me do this. It just beeps at me. Certainly this can be done. Can anyone please explain?

It's done with layers.

Please do the tutorials, watch the videos, and look up LAYERS in the help file.
