Lyrics tool: Melisma lines question
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I have a question about melisma lines with the Lyrics tool. I have a a few instances in a chart of mine where the melisma starts on the last note of a line and carries over to the next measure of the next line of music. But sometimes Finale doesn't draw it right, where the __ line of the melisma doesn't show until the next line of music, where it should also show right by the first instance of the note/syllabus where it starts. It's kind of hard to explain.

It's possible that the lyric at the end of the line is too far to the right for the extension line to show. If you add a little space to the end of the measure it might display. Go to Measure Attributes and add "Extra Space at End of Measure". Otherwise, if you could post a sample file someone may be able to run down a solution.

Or, you could use the measure tool/note spacing, and drag the notes to the right. But N has the right cause, I’m sure.

Here's a screenshot. I'm working on chart of 'La Bamba' for a project hence the Spanish. I did add extra space to measure 11 and that worked - it did show the melisma line for that syllable. But I'm a bit concerned that it makes the spacing look off when compared to the measure directly below it. I also tried adding space to measure 22 at the end of 'capitan' but that did not work. The melisma line still doesn't show next to that syllable.

If you choose Edit Word Extensions from the Lyric Menu, can you pull the extension out of the handle aways?ry1633 wrote:I also tried adding space to measure 22 at the end of 'capitan' but that did not work. The melisma line still doesn't show next to that syllable.

One thing to test is the System End amount in the Page used for setting the Word Extension options. It is a negative number by default. You might want to try a positive number.

Where do I find that setting? Is it under Lyrics Options?zuill wrote:One thing to test is the System End amount in the Page used for setting the Word Extension options. It is a negative number by default. You might want to try a positive number.
