I am working on a composition for solo violin which includes knocking. I have specified a woodblock sound and put it in layer 4. I would like the knocking to be notated with an "x" notehead in the score.
Is there a way to specify the "x" notehead just in layer 4? I have tried to do this with the "Note Shapes" dialog box (through the Staff Tool). In that box, I have put "quarter" under notehead, "G" under pitch, and "X" under symbol. This works fine for a measure that only has knocks, but I can't figure out how to specify that it's just for layer 4 when there are other layers used in the same measure.
Going through the Special Tools Palette is another option, but that seems geared to individual notes.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

The JW Change plug-in (under JW Tools) can do it. Noteheads -> Shape + select the X notehead shape and the appropriate layer.

Another way : select layer 4, Document -> Show active layer only, then Utilities -> Change -> Noteheads.
In JW Change, you can also select "Custom Shape" and find a suitable notehead.

Thanks to you both for your replies. This is my first time on the Forum and I look forward to looking at it regularly. I ended up using the second suggestion (selecting the active layer and using Utilities to change the notehead).
This was a bit of a glitch in that the spacing in some measures was off (notes crowded together). I ended up using Utilities...music spacing...apply note spacing, and then update layout. That seems to have solved the problem, but I'm not sure why it happened in the first place.
Again, thanks for your help, it saved me a lot of time and frustration!
