It’s Allegro 2007b.r1 and Windows 10. I would like to start playback using a Novation Zero controller. The transport buttons do not start or stop playback. I have tried setting ‘wait for midi sync’ but nothing the controller sends seems able to start playback. Thank you.

Well, you are trying to use a 12 year old program.
I would suggest you download the demo of F26, and see if that works.

An update to this question. After some little effort it turned out a solution was to connect the Zero to a DAW. I used FL Studio but probably others would work just as well. This can be set to send a Midi sync pulse to Allegro which is waiting to begin playback. The transport buttons on the Zero can then be used to control the Finale playback. I did look at the F26 version of Finale but found the differences between it and Allegro 2007b r1 to be very small - mostly a few cosmetic changes, so there is no point in changing in my case.
