Quit Finale and restart. Any difference? Are you using Human Playback?
You might want to post a one page sample so we can have a look.

Thanks for responding. It was just that one file that wasn't responding, so I wrote it again as a new file and it worked fine. I'll go ahead and delete these posts so I don't clutter up the forum. Thanks again.

You solved the problem by going out of your way and re-entering a new file. That's fine, but it might have been more valuable to have diagnosed the problem and fixed the original file. It probably was an easy fix and would have added to your knowledge of how things work in Finale. Attaching a file or a part of a file for others to look at and diagnose means you don't have to go it alone.
Just a suggestion.

tdlucas,
Even though you have solved your problem, if you have the original, non-working file it might be interesting to try some easy fixes to see if any of them solve the problem. One would be to create a blank score, copy the old score and paste it onto the new score. Another would be to export it as an XML file and re-import it. Another would be to delete MIDI data in case there is something overriding the Human Playback. Sometimes the hard fix (as you did it) is the right thing, but you might want to know if an easy fix could have helped.

You're right. I went back to the original file and found this: if I insert rit. before a slower tempo change exactly two measure later, the music slows down nicely. But if I insert another rit. after the tempo change, the first rit. doesn't work. See the example I attached. However, if I move the tempo change back one eighth note to the last note of the measure before, the first rit. works fine.

I can reproduce your problem. In fact, the second rit. actually speeds up from 40! Perhaps rit. needs a goal?

It's not a bug. Whenever you have a rit. or accel. you need to state a new tempo at the end of that direction, so Finale knows what to do. As far as I know, no software is capable of mind reading. If you don't want the new tempo to show in the score, use a hidden text style.
