TGTools menu shortcut for ties
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I finally did it. I upgraded to the latest version of Finale.
As I'm going, one of the first customizations I needed to do was change the NUM 0 key to tie in speedy. Problem is, this version of Finale seems to toggle tie/untie pretty quickly when I push the 0 key, meaning there's just as much of a chance that I get the tie to stay or not.
How do I prevent the button from cycling? This is a borderline infuriating change from previous versions, and I hope there's a way to fix this.

Is there any solution for this? I still use the NUM pad for speedy entry, but if making a shortcut to the 0 key for ties makes the tie/untie button just toggle very fast, it makes that button useless for me. I can't see an option to turn off auto toggle.
This happens on both my laptop and desktop, both Windows 10 machines.

Have you tried slowing your key repeat rate and/or delaying the start of the key repeat in Windows? I had a similar issue with a different app and slowing the key repeat rate via the operating system solved it (Mac OS).
Also - we all set up our keyboards / layouts differently, but are you aware that the tie add/remove toggle function (while in Speedy) is already coded to the equal sign and the "t" keys by default? The zero key is coded to starting/stopping the speedy window (by default).
Could there be some new conflicts there? I'm a Mac user so can't help with any Windows settings adjustments, only know they exist similar to Mac OS.

This is new. I'll have to try that; I've never had this issue with previous versions of Finale. The last version was 2014. I haven't tried, but I don't think holding the key down would toggle on previous versions. But this is a good suggestion.
Yeah, it's just the way I've been doing speedy entry for 20 years now. It keeps my hand on the NUM Pad, which makes it more efficient, and I don't need to look.bakkumd wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 5:18 pmAlso - we all set up our keyboards / layouts differently, but are you aware that the tie add/remove toggle function (while in Speedy) is already coded to the equal sign and the "t" keys by default? I don't think there's a conflict causing it, since all it does is make the tie appear and disappear super fast.
So I checked the repeat delay, and it was exactly the same. But I put it down to the slowest and checked it in Finale.
Turns out I was wrong and it's not the repeat function. What seems to actually be happening is the tie appears when I push down, and disappears when I lift the key. So a downstroke and upstroke is registering as two presses in V27...no wonder every attempt I made to hit the key as fast as possible didn't help! If I hold the key down, the repeat function works normally with the proper delay.

Interesting... the two windows are not the same...
How long has it been since you've updated your TGTools Plug-in?
The current TGTools version for Finale 27 is v3.00rc
The version for Finale 2014.5 was v2.80rc1 and the version for Finale 2014 was v2.71.
Is it possible you need to update your TGTools for Finale 27? Here is a direct link to the TGTools download page:

Actually, it's technically TGTools Lite. I wonder if that makes a difference?
I'll download the trial version, but I've never seen much from TGTools that I've really needed that Lite didn't already cover, even after 20 years of use.

It is possible that the TGTools didn't get updated when you went from 2014 to V27.
If you go to the plugin folder, the TGToolsLE.bundle file should show you the version number. Mine shows 27.08. The creation date is the day I installed the 27.4 update.
My Finale 26 TGToolsLE.bundle file shows version 3.62.
I've been reading about so many Windows related issues with Finale 27.4, not updating a plugin could be one of them as well...

So does mine.
I have also experienced that problem with defining a ties shortcut to 0 in Speedy (as soon as I updated to Fin27.3, some time ago already). After trying various things I finally just gave up and used the T shortcut.
I'm not clear about what happens if I download that TGTools v.3 from your download link - will that update my installed TGToolsLite version or is that a new installation of the Pro (and therefore payable) version? (which I don't want to do, don't need it).

mmike,
The full version of TGTools is an independent install and will not impact the free version that is included in the full Finale install . On a Mac, the full version of TGTools adds a new menu item at the end of the menu bar row. (after the "Help" menu item) I'm assuming it will do the same in Windows. The full version is a commercial product - prices are on the link below.
There is a trial version of the full TGTools - 1 month. The trial is activated when you follow the "register free" link at the very bottom of this page: https://tgtools.com/regfrm.htm

I seem to remember that when Finale was made a 64-bit program there was an issue with TGTools, since its 32-bit and 64-bit versions both use the same Windows registry entry. Since bobeuph apparently upgraded from 2014.4 (32-bit), maybe that's what's going on. I remember a discussion on the old MakeMusic forum, perhaps involving Steve Zuill, which I think is still around for searching (forum.makemusic.com?).

motet,
I'm 100% Mac, so no issues with TGTools for me, just replying with possible options to troubleshoot with the OP.
32 bit plugins would not load in a 64 bit app, so the menu item would not be visible.

Installed it, the 0 keyboard shortcut for ties still doesn't work (even after adjusting various keyboard repeat settings)
Back to the T.
I think the real cause is the interference with that Finale pre-programmed setting for the 0 which opens and closes a Speedy frame (which is actually quite pointless, what is it for?). But I see no way to de-program that bult-in short cut. Is there?

The only file I see in the folder is TGToolsLE.fxt. I tried opening it in Notepad to see whatever I might be able to, but Notepad REALLY doesn't like it. I don't see any bundle files in the plugin folder.
This also prompted me to open 2014 and see what happens now, and all my shortcuts are now marked as "currently inaccessible" and are only behaving in their default manner. Weird. So I assume the plugin is a single instance and is shared by both programs. I wonder if uninstalling 2014 would have a positive effect?

So - I'm thinking the ".bundle" might be a Mac file type, yours in Windows being ".fxt". I should have anticipated that the file types would be different, apologies.
At this point, I'm hoping that a Windows user might chime in and offer some ideas...?

He is not.
For what it's worth, I have Finale 2014.5 installed with TG Tools Pro. I have 27.3 installed but don't use it for work. If I open the TG Tools Lite Keyboard Remapper, it's populated but it's a mess and doesn't function. I believe this is because the 32-bit and 64-bit versions use the same Windows registry entry (not sure about the Mac). The registry key is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SOMUSQUE.
I would contact MakeMusic.

Well, that's a shame. I was very active in the MakeMusic forums around 20 years ago, and he was an enigma. Very helpful and knowledgeable, but I never knew what he did outside those forums.
And just my luck, that they don't do email help anymore, and I'm never going to remember to call them during business hours.
