I think the problem you describe is unrelated to your computer in general. It sounds as though you need to allot more memory to Finale. I work on a Mac, but I assume the process is similar on a PC. Click/highlight the Finald icon; you should be able to call up an information file on the program. From there you can determine how much memory you wish Finale to have. I'd try that before going through the whole de-frag process.
It would be nice if programs allotted themselves the right amount of memory, but there is no way to know how many programs will be open at the same time - they'd end up fighting over who gets to use the memory. So, like kids in the back seat of the car, we have to take control....
